I started growing my locs in 1999. That is 16 years of trial and error with different products. I have learned over time to keep my loc maintenance routine consistent and simple. Since people approach me often about my locs, I figured posting my routine to my blog would be beneficial to others. When it’s time to wash my locs, my shampoo of choice, is Alaffia Shampoo. It comes in different scents, but my favorite is the coconut lime. It is gluten free, paraben free, and vegan. It is made with virgin coconut oil and shea butter to help keep my locs…

Billy Bungo resides in the quiet town of Montclair, New Jersey. He is an accomplished musician, a Priest of Ifa, and an amazing wood carver. When he is not playing music (he plays over 20 instruments) or doing spiritual work, you will find him quietly working on his wood carvings. Born and raised in Montclair, New Jersey, Billy Bungo lived in Nigeria for many years. This is reflected in both his music and his carvings. I met Billy Bungo about 15 years ago. I am very familiar with his music (which I will post and share at a later date).…

To see Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet as Best Friends and Co-Parents today is inspiring! I loved them as a married couple, simply organically beautiful. “They have so much love for each other,” Zoë Kravitz said of Lenny Kravitz, Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa (Lisa Bonet’s husband), “It makes things so easy that my parents are still very close. My dad and my step-dad get along really well, and my dad loves and is close with my brother [Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa] and sister [Lola Iolani Momoa].” I have a 16 year old daughter and maintain a close relationship with…

If you live in Los Angeles or plan to visit Los Angeles you MUST visit this spot! I stumbled upon this cute, eclectic bakery called Southern Girl Desserts. My sweet tooth could not resist going inside and trying a few delectables. Pictured are the pineapple coconut cupcakes, which were absolutely delish! I also tried the banana pudding and it simply melted in my mouth. I honestly wanted to lick the container clean.  And they don’t stop there, they also have cakes, pies, peach cobbler, and latte’s. Southern Girl Desserts is located in Los Angeles, inside the Baldwin Hills shopping center.…

Last month, here in Los Angeles, we had the Pan African Film Festival.  One of the films featured was the documentary “City of God- 10 Years Later.”  First of all, if you haven’t seen the film “City of God” I highly recommend that you do.  Released in 2002, it was a little independent film from Brazil that took the world by storm!  It’s about 2 boys growing up in the slums of Rio de Jeneiro in the 1970’s.  One becomes a photographer the other becomes a drug dealer.  It is based on a true story. “City of God- 10 years…

Skimming through the archives of online magazine “Who What Wear”, I came across a very intriguing article. “How much should you really be spending on clothing every month?”  If saving money was one of your New Year’s resolutions, take notes!  According to financial planner Peete Dunn, we should spend 5% of our take home pay. Here is an example of the breakdown.  If you bring home $3000 a month, after taxes, you should spend $150 a month on clothes. So take what you bring home monthly, multiply that by .05, and there is your budget. Now this is simply a…

Let me start by saying, Bubba Gump Shrimp is just not the place for a first date. There are so many inexpensive, unique places here to dine here in Los Angeles.  Bubba Gump Shrimp is just a no! I recently had the pleasure of catching up with my dear friend Stacey.  She couldn’t wait to tell me about a recent first date she had at Bubba Gump Shrimp.  Like many people, Stacey is an online dater, and met a man with whom she found interesting.  She actually reached out to him and they had a meet and greet over coffee.…

If you love jazz, I highly recommend a visit to Upstairs at Vitello’s (located in Studio City, CA). It’s a small quaint place, that always features amazing talent. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a Friday night, than seeing the legendary Poncho Sanchez play his congas! Lol I was so close to his drums, I was tempted to play too. And when Poncho told us all to dance, I was more than happy to oblige…
