First of all, some of you may be asking “What is a Pre-Poo?” A Pre-Poo is the process of applying a treatment to your hair prior to shampooing and conditioning. Hence the name “Pre-Poo”. It’s an extra step you can add to your hair routine. A Pre-Poo will add moisture to your hair, and help keep it from becoming too dry from shampooing. We all know that shampooing will strip your hair of moisture.
Now that fall has officially begun and winter is just around the corner, this is the perfect time to experiment with different Pre-Poo’s. There are so many different natural goodies you can use as a Pre-Poo. They can even be bought over the counter. However, I’m a huge fan of using natural goodies for beauty treatments. Honey being one of my absolute favorite things to use.
A Few Benefits of Using Honey in Your Hair:
- Honey is an emollient, it seals in moisture.
- Honey has antioxidant properties. Keeps your hair and scalp healthy.
- Honey boosts hair growth and boosts dormant hair follicles.
- Honey cleans impurities off of hair follicles. FYI- clogged follicles =hair falling out.
I put three honey based Pre-Poo’s to the test. All three very simple, with different results. Check them out below…
HONEY PRE-POO
3 Tablespoons of honey
1 Tablespoon of water
Mix in bowl
Apply generously to hair and scalp
Cover hair with plastic cap
Leave on hair for a minimum of 1 hour or overnight
Wash hair as usual
*Adjust amount of honey and water according to hair length.

I absolutely LOVED this particular pre-poo! I know honey is an excellent moisturizer, but I had no idea it would leave my hair feeling so soft. I intended to only leave in on my hair for an hour. However, I fell asleep and it stayed in overnight. The only downfall was some of the honey got on my sheets. Outside of that, I give this one two thumbs up.
Honey & Avocado Pre-Poo
3 Tablespoons of honey
1 avocado
Mash avocado in bowl
Add honey
Mix well
Apply generously to hair and scalp
Leave on hair for one hour
Cover hair with plastic cap
Leave on hair for a minimum of 1 hour
Wash hair as usual
*Adjust amount of honey and avocado according to hair length
I honestly had higher expectations with this one. I was excited about putting avocado in my hair along with the honey. The results were not as great as the Honey Pre-Poo. My hair did not feel as soft. I intend to give this one another shot, and tweak it just a bit. Add an oil for an extra kick of moisture.

Honey and Organic Coconut Oil
3 Tablespoons of honey
5 Tablespoons of Organic Coconut Oil
Mix well
Apply generously to hair and scalp
Cover hair with plastic cap
Leave on hair for a minimum of 1 hour or overnight
Wash hair as usual
*Adjust amount of honey and coconut oil according to hair length

This one was absolutely fabulous! I already apply organic coconut oil to my hair daily. Mixing it with honey and just allow my hair to fully absorb it was an added luxury. With this particular one I added some heat by sitting under my heat cap for the first 15 minutes. It was after this pre-poo I decided to give the Honey and Avocado pre-poo a second try. As I mentioned before I’m going to tweak it by adding some type of oil for additional moisture. I’ll re-post that one after I test it with various oils.
This is definitely the time of year to add a pre-poo to your hair routine. Protect your hair and scalp during these colder months. These are all very affordable. You will be happy you treated your hair and scalp to the extra attention.
